As the holiday season approaches, Portlanders gear up for some of the most spectacular Christmas light displays in the country. From dazzling multicolored drive-throughs to quiet candlelit gardens, there's something here for everyone. These are the seven displays we think every Portland family should see at least once.

1. Winter Wonderland at Portland International Raceway
Drive-through display, North Portland
A winter wonderland indeed, with more than 250 displays and over a million LED lights stretching across the raceway's entire 2 mile course. Visitors can drive through in their own cars or ride the Winter Wonderland Train for a unique, immersive viewing experience.
The displays include traditional holiday motifs like snowmen, Christmas trees, and reindeer alongside more whimsical designs, from a giant gingerbread house to a twinkling hot air balloon, with the whole display synced to music. Special themed nights like Ugly Sweater Night and Bike the Lights Night add to the fun, and a portion of the proceeds supports the Sunshine Division, a local nonprofit providing food and clothing assistance to families in need.
2. The Grotto's Christmas Festival of Lights
Walk-through festival, Northeast Portland
The Grotto is a serene sanctuary the rest of the year, and during the Christmas Festival of Lights it transforms into a magical wonderland of shimmering lights, interactive displays, and holiday music. Visitors are enveloped in a warm glow as they wander the twisting paths and hidden alcoves, with the scent of hot cocoa and cinnamon in the air and choirs performing throughout the grounds.
The festival features a million sparkling lights and an illuminated forest, with colors ranging from deep blues and purples to bright yellows and oranges. At the heart of it is a stunning life-size Nativity scene bathed in warm golden light, and a quiet candlelit chapel where visitors can pause and reflect on the meaning of the season. It's a display where beauty and peace converge, and the memories tend to stick for a lifetime.
3. Peacock Lane
Historic residential street, Southeast Portland
This quaint residential street transforms into a dazzling display of holiday lights every year, drawing visitors from all over the city. Each beautifully decorated house vies for attention with its own style and charm. Some are outlined in twinkling white lights while others wear a full array of color, creating a spectacle that stretches as far as the eye can see.
The details make it: a giant illuminated snowman on one lawn, life-size toy soldiers standing guard on another, and vibrant decorations at every turn. Holiday music fills the air, kids run wide-eyed between houses, and vendors with cookies and hot cocoa keep everyone warm. Peacock Lane has been at this for a century, and walking it is a Portland rite of passage.
4. The Christmas Ships Parade
On the Willamette and Columbia Rivers
Portland's Christmas Ships Parade is a beloved tradition more than 60 years running. A fleet of privately owned boats, each decorated by its owner with sparkling lights in every pattern from glittering stars to flashing candy canes, travels the Willamette and Columbia Rivers over roughly two weeks each December, following multiple routes along both rivers.
Spectators gather along the riverbanks, on bridges, and in boats of their own to watch the glowing procession pass, and the reflections of the lights on the water are mesmerizing. Many families make it an annual tradition, blankets and hot cocoa in hand. It's a celebration of light and community that you can catch from a dozen different vantage points around the metro.
5. ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo
Walk-through display, Washington Park
The Oregon Zoo is a fun visit any time of year, but during the holidays it becomes a winter wonderland, with more than a million lights illuminating the paths that wind through the park. The lights twinkle overhead like stars, and at the center of it all stands a giant tree lit in a full rainbow of colors that stops people in their tracks.
Most of the animals are asleep, but the park is alive with music and laughter. Bundle up, walk hand in hand, and stop at the cocoa stand for a cup with a whipped cream top. It's the kind of evening where the rest of the world melts away and it's just your family and the glow.
6. The Belmont Street Christmas Lights
Neighborhood display, Southeast Portland
The Belmont lights are a beloved neighborhood tradition, with neighbors coming together to create a whimsical, playful display. Houses up and down the street wear lights and decorations of every color and shape, a kaleidoscope of glowing candy canes, snowmen, and reindeer, with strings of color wrapping the trees and bushes.
The centerpiece is a towering Christmas tree covered in twinkling lights and shimmering ornaments, and the elegant old houses underneath only make the display better. What makes Belmont special is the sense of community: families and friends gathering, kids giggling and playing, and the feeling that the whole street built this together, because it did.
7. Christmas in the Garden at The Oregon Garden
Walk-through garden display, Silverton (worth the drive)
The Oregon Garden is magical any time of year, and during the holidays it becomes a wonderland of lights and cheer. The soft glow illuminates winding paths through snow-dusted trees and shrubs that seem to sparkle with delight, creating a peaceful ambiance that wraps around you as you walk.
The displays are storybook stuff: towering snowmen, cheerful elves, and a jolly Saint Nick himself, rendered in intricate detail and vibrant color. Kids run between displays pointing out favorites, couples take the romantic route, and families huddle over hot cocoa. It's the calm, warm end of the Portland lights spectrum, and a lovely capstone to the season.
